Pan's Labyrinth breaks US record

has become the most seen Spanish language film of all time in the US. After last week’s announcement of its six Oscar nominations, the film attracted American audiences to the tune of $21m grossed at the box office so far.

With this result, del Toro's fantastic tale has beaten Like Water For Chocolate, which was, until the last weekend, the most successful Spanish language title ever released in the US. According to distributor Picturehouse Entertainment, Pan's Labyrinth may pull in another $3m, four times the amount of Alfonso Arau's 1992 film.

Although Pan's Labyrinth is representing Mexico in the Oscar race for Best Foreign Language Film, it is actually a co-production between Spain (78%) and Mexico (22%). Del Toro, whose films were once produced by Pedro Almodóvar's El Deseo, was this time backed by Madrid-based Estudios Picasso, with support from private Spanish broadcaster Telecinco.

According to provisional ICAA data on 2006, the film was one of the titles behind Estudios Picasso becoming the most successful local production outfit in terms of box office, with over €31m grossed, more than €7m of which came from Pan's Labyrinth, released in Spain in early October.

The film ended 2006 in third position among the year’s most-seen domestic films, behind Alatriste [+see also:

. Audience success was followed by industry recognition at the latest Goya awards, where the film won seven prizes, including Best Female Revelation for 13 year-old Ivana Baquero (see news).
