Coca wins in Germany

by

Chechen militant Sainap Gaschaiewa – the subject of Swiss director Eric Bergkraut’s documentary Coca: la Colombe de Tchétchénie (Doc Productions) – will be presented the International Human Rights Movie Award by Richard Gere on February 12 at the 6th Cinema for Peace Festival in Berlin. The film will be screened the evening before in the presence of the director and Gaschaiewa.

First brought to attention two years ago in the International Forum of Young Cinema at Berlin, Coca has screened at over 20 international festivals, including Tribeca, Amsterdam, Gotenburg, Montreal, Tallinn, Tehran, Warsaw and Prague, where it won the Rudolf Vrba Award in 2006.

Currently on release in Germany and France, the film has received excellent reviews from the French press. According to Le Monde, "Eric Bergkraut’s documentary is a solid work by a journalist that shows both the great courage of his heroine (in every sense of the word) and the obstacles she overcomes", and, according to Télérama, "this militant documentary with a rare intensity denounces the unsupportable inertia of European democracies".
