Dardennes take on Le silence de Lorna

by

Luc and Jean-Pierre Dardenne began lensing on their sixth feature last week in their native Wallonia, where all of their films have been based. Shot in their home town of Liege, the new feature – currently under the working title Le Silence de Lorna (“Lorna’s Silence”) – is scheduled to shoot for 12 weeks through late December.

Starring Jérémie Renier and Fabrizio Rongione (recently seen in What Makes You Happy [+see also:

Luc Dardenne wrote in "Au dos de nos images" (see article): "Perhaps our next film will be about a young woman who has every reason to be desperate and who continues to believe that everything is possible. A religious believer of sorts, even if God is dead [...] How can a woman who doesn’t believe in God believe everything is possible? Where does this crazy hope come from? She is strange, out-of-the-ordinary. A fictional character always swims against the tide."

Le silence de Lorna tells the story of a young Albanian woman who – in order to realise her dreams in Belgium – enters a marriage of convenience with a young drug addict. Her decision is far from innocent though, because if her husband dies from an overdose Lorna will have the freedom to do as she wants. However, the young man wants to live and once again the Dardenne brothers explore a moral dilemma.

Produced on a €4m budget by Olivier Bronckart for their outfit Les Films du Fleuve with RTBF (Radio Télévision Belge de la Communauté Française), Le Silence de Lorna is a French co-production with Denis Freyd of Archipel 35, and Arte France Cinéma.

The film received support from the Centre du Cinéma et de l’Audiovisuel de la Communauté française (€620,000), Centre National de la Cinématographie (CNC) advances on receipts, backing from Eurimages (€360,000), Wallimage funding and tax shelter funding from Inver Invest.

International sales are being handled by Celluloid Dreams.
