Teeming with a selection of 140 titles, the Trieste Film Festival (January 17-24), historically dedicated to Eastern European cinema, will kick off its 19th edition with Jiri Menzel’s widely acclaimed I Served the King of England [+see also:

This year’s feature competition spans from the Baltic to the Mediterranean Seas. The 13 films vying for the Trieste Award include two titles from Slovenia – Estrellita [+see also:

Screening out of competition is the domestic premiere of Off the Ropes by Fulvio Bernasconi. The film won its male lead Michele Venitucci the ex-aequo Best Actor prize at Locarno last year.

Retrospectives this year are on Hungarian filmmaker Istvan Gaal [Orpheus and Eurydice (1985), The Falcons (1970)], who recently passed away, and the Trieste-born critic-screenwriter-producer-author Tullio Kezich.

The festival also features international competitions of short films and documentaries.
