Four Spanish titles in a Berlinale paying tribute to Buñuel

It's the final countdown for the opening of the 58th Berlinale (February 7-17), at which Spanish cinema will be represented by four features, all out of competition, as well as a retrospective of Aragon-born filmmaker Luis Buñuel.

The Panorama sidebar will host three titles: Eskalofrío, 3 Days and Transsiberian [+see also:

The first one is a horror film directed by Isidro Ortiz and produced and backed by Fausto Producciones, Telecinco Cinema, Apuntolapospo and TVC. Javier Gutiérrez's directorial debut 3 Days is produced by Maestranza Films, Green Moon Producciones and Pentagrama Films. Lastly, Brad Anderson’s Transsiberian, recently at Sundance, is co-produced by Spain's Filmax and features Woody Harrelson, Emily Mortimer, Eduardo Noriega and Kate Mara.

The gastronomic documentary El pollo, el pez y el cangrejo real, directed by José Luis López Linares and produced by Lópezli Film and Zebra Producciones, is part of the Berlinale Special.

Although no local film is in competition for the Golden Bear, one of the US titles, Elegy, was directed by Isabel Coixet. This is the third time the Catalan director will be the Berlinale, after Things I Never Told You (1996, Panorama) and My Life Without Me [+see also:

(2003, official competition).

Finally, the Buñuel retrospective will present 32 films directed in different periods of the director's career in Spain, France and Mexico; along with the documentary El último guión: Buñuel en la memoria by Gaizka Urresti and Javier Espada; a screening of The Andalusian Dog with several music groups, including BCN216; and an exhibition organised by the Cervantes Institute of Berlin.
