Increase in shoot relocations in 2007

by

According to the Observatory at the FICAM (Federation of Film, Audiovisual and Multimedia Industries), in 2007 the production of French initiative films – excluding animated films and documentaries – amounted to 161 shoots (+6% compared to 2006), i.e. 1322 weeks of shooting, including 1026 on French territory.

Shoot relocations rose by 22% (compared to 17% in 2006) due to the increase in co-productions and certain artistic constraints (for example in the case of Rithy Panh’s Un barrage contre le pacifique or Barbet Schroeder’s Inju), but also due to tax advantages offered by certain territories, as in the case of Christophe Barratier’s Paris 36 [+see also:

, which was filmed in the Czech Republic.

At the same time, the Observatory recorded a decline in US feature film shoots in France. According to the Ficam, this fact reinforces the necessity for an international tax credit which would attract film shoots and post-production activities to France.

In terms of shooting media, film remained the most popular medium in 2007 with 79% of projects shot in 35mm and 16mm. Video stock (88% HD) continues to slowly gain popularity, accounting for 21% of shoots (compared to 16% in 2006). On the other hand, digital post-production (except for editing) increased by 9 points, representing 48% of post-production completed in France in 2007.

Finally, there was also an increase in special effects, which were used on 52 projects in 2007 (compared to 43 in 2006) and the industry’s annual turnover rose to €33m.
