Shorts galore in Brussels


The 11th edition of the Brussels International Short Film Festival closed on Sunday, May 5, with a second screening of the prize-winning films, which were announced on Saturday evening.

French shorts dominate the international prize list, having scooped five of the seven awards.

The Grand Prize – awarded by the jury (Joachim Lafosse, François Pirot, Yannick Rénier and Willy Stassen) – was shared by Franco Lolli’s Como Todo el Mundo, a final-year film by the Femis graduate; and Mompelaar, by Belgian directors Marc Roels and Wim Reygaert. Both films attracted attention at the Clermont-Ferrand Film Festival in February, winning the National Competition Grand Prize and the Special Jury Prize, respectively.

The two acting awards went to Cécile Ducrocq and Raphaël Goldmann for the French film Leçon Particulière by Raphaël Chevènement.

and will soon appear in Musée haut, Musée Bas and Le Bal des Actrices – presented his debut directorial short, C'est dimanche (also lauded at Clermont-Ferrand), which picked up the Be TV award.

The Audience Award went to David Chahron’s Le Secret de Salomon, sealing the French triumph.

Milan by Serbian/German director Michaela Kezele also received a prize in the international competition.

In the national competition, Vincent Bierrewaerts’ Le Pont scooped the top award, drawing attention to one of the major trends in contemporary Belgian film: the popularity of animated works.
