Emden – Norderney pays tribute to Ulrich Mühe
The 19th edition of the Emden – Norderney International Film Festival (June 4-11) kicks off today and opens with Eran Riklis’ German/French/Israeli co-production Lemon Tree [+see also:

film profile] (Panorama Audience Award at the latest Berlin Film Festival), which will vie for the Bernhard Wicki Award and DGB Award. This feature replaces Clara by Emden-born director Helma Sanders-Brahms, which was originally chosen as the opening film but turned out to be unavailable at the last minute.
The international selection includes Dana Nechushtan’s Dutch/Belgian co-production Dunya & Desie [+see also:

film profile], which screened in competition at Berlin; Nacho Vigalondo’s award-winning Spanish title Timecrimes; and Threes Anna’s Dutch/Irish/South African co-production The Bird Can't Fly (Special Jury Prize at Sofia Film Festival).
A section entitled "New British/Irish Cinema" will present nine recent titles, including Ken Loach’s It's A Free World [+see also:

film profile]. Seven films starring Emma Thompson will be screened in homage to the English actress. There will also be special programmes devoted to recent German titles, film shorts and children’s films.
One of the highlights at this year’s festival is the tribute to actor Ulrich Mühe, who died just a year ago. Seven films will be screened, including the Oscar-winning The Lives of Others [+see also:

On June 8, the festival will welcome the actor’s youngest son and wife, actress Susanne Lothar.
