No One’s Son triumphs at Pula

In the national competition of eight films, Arsen Anton Ostojic’s No One’s Son won six out of 16 Golden Arenas at the 55th Pula Film Festival (July 19-26): Best Film for producer Jozo Patljak, Best Director, Best Original Score for Mate Matisic, Best Actor for Alen Liveric, Best Special Effects for Drago and Marko Poldrugac and Best Sound Design for Damir Kljucaric and Blaz Andracic.

Vinko Bresan’s Will Not End There received Best Editing for Sandra Botica Bresan, Best Supporting Actor for Leon Lucev, Best Costume Design for Zeljka Franulovic, Best Art Direction for Mario Ivezic and the Audience Award. Zrinko Ogresta’s Karlovy Vary competition entry Behind the Glass received Golden Arenas for Best Cinematography (Davorin Gecl) and Best Actress (Jadranka Djokic).

Sarajevo competition entries Buick Riviera by Goran Rusinovic and Kino Lika by Dalibor Matanic took one and three Golden Arenas respectively. Kino Lika got Best Make-up for Mojca Gorgoranc, Best Debut Actress for Areta Curkovic and Best Supporting Actress for Sandra Botica Bresan. Buick Riviera won Best Screenplay for Goran Rusinovic and Miljenko Jergovic, upon whose novel the film is based.

Croatian critics voted for No One’s Son, while 11 international journalists opted for Buick Riviera.

The international competition – judged by a jury comprising Screen International correspondent Edna Fainaru; Joel Chapron, selector of Middle and Eastern European films at Cannes; Paz Lazaro, programme manager of the Berlinale Panorama; Fernanda Silva, director of the Festroia Festival; and British film Critic Phillip Bergson – chose as Best Film Claude Chabrol’s The Girl Cut in Two [+see also:

. Mike Leigh won Best Director for Happy-Go-Lucky [+see also:

, and Liu Weiwei received the Best Actress award in Wang Xiaoshuai’s In Love We Trust.
