Set just before the outbreak of the Second World War, Inheritance recounts the misfortunes of Eszter, a serene 50-year-old woman who lives alone and no longer expects much from life. But a telegram turns her world upside down and forces her to confront feelings that she doesn’t understand.

Twenty years previously, she fell in love with the seductive Lajos who betrayed her by eloping with her sister and leaving her on the brink of financial ruin. Now Lajos (whom she still loves despite herself) reappears and announces that he is about to visit with his two children.
