Salemme and Palme d’Or winner Cantet hit screens
by Gabriele Barcaro
09/10/2008 - Three European films hit screens tomorrow. First up, tomorrow Medusa is releasing on 450 screens No Problem, the new comedy directed by and starring Vincenzo Salemme. The actor-filmmaker is trying to top the success of his previous film, SMS – Sotto Mentite Spoglie, which last year garnered over €5m at the local box office.
Highly anticipated by cinephiles is Palme d’Or winner The Class [trailer, film focus] by Laurent Cantet, which is coming out in Italy (distributed by Mikado on 70 screens) during a moment of strong public (and political) debate on education.
The last European release is The Women by Diane English (BIM). The remake of George Cukor’s 1939 classic is a UK production by Mick Jagger’s Jagged Film made in co-production with the US.
Also on release is The Hurt Locker (Videa-CDE), Kathryn Bigelow’s war film in competition at the latest Venice Film Festival, Frank Darabont’s horror title The Mist (Key Films/Lucky Red) and the spoof Disaster Movie by Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer (Eagle Pictures).
