1st European Film Music Days get underway

To celebrate the centenary of the first original film score by renowned composer Camille Saint-Saëns (for The Assassination of the Duke de Guise, 1908), Paris is hosting the 1st European Film Music Days (EFMD) today and tomorrow.

The event’s special guest is Scottish composer Patrick Doyle (two-time Oscar nominee whose filmography includes Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Man to Man, Gosford Park and Carlito's Way) and a Centenary Prize will be presented to Italian maestro Ennio Morricone.

The First European Film Music Trophies will also be awarded to a composer, a director, a producer, a composer-filmmaker duo, a young composer and a company that promotes film music.

Held at the Cité de la Musique, the event will bring together over 250 professionals from across Europe, including composers, directors, screenwriters, producers, broadcasters, musicians, editors, agents, institutional representatives, festival directors and film score experts.

The following composers will attend the event: Norway’s Bent Aserud and Gaute Storaas, Denmark’s Søren Hyldgaard, Germany’s Martin Boettcher, Switzerland’s Louis Crelier, Italy’s Carlo Crivelli and Franco Piersanti, Holland’s Loek Dikker, and France’s Gréco Casadesus, Khalil Chahine, Vladimir Cosma, Eric Demarsan, Antoine Duhamel, Francis Lai and Jean-Claude Petit.

Also expected to attend are Véronique Cayla (director general of the National Film Centre (CNC)), Yvon Thiec (Eurocinema) and Cécile Despringre (FERA).

The programme features several round tables, including "What future is there for audiovisual art faced with a technological revolution that both carries and threatens it? ", "New practices for film music" and "Film music: a virtual heritage? ".

Composers rightly consider themselves as the poor relation in film production. On average, barely 1.5% of a budget is devoted to music rights according to a study by the CNC on the structure of production costs in 2007 for French initiative films. The situation is hardly better in the rest of Europe, but it is very different in the US.

The 1st European Film Music Days are co-organised by the Union of Film Music Composers (UCMF) and the European Federation of Film and Audiovisual Composers (FFACE). The latter brings together Spain’s Musimagen, Switzerland’s UFMC, Germany’s Composers Club and DKV, Denmark’s DPA, Finland’s Elvis ry, the UK’s BAC&S, Sweden’s SKAP and FST, Austria’s OeKB, Norway’s Nopa, Italy’s UNCLA, Greece’s EMSE, France’s UCMF and Holland’s MIMM.
