Zelenka, Slama and Marhoul dominate Lions

05/02/2009 - The Czech Film and Television Academy has announced the nominees for the 16th Czech Lion Awards. Of the 26 feature films eligible for nomination, three films dominate the main categories. Petr Zelenka's The Karamazovs [trailer], Vaclav Marhoul's Tobruk, and Bohdan Slama's A Country Teacher [trailer, film focus] are each nominated for Best Film, Best Director and Best Screenplay.
In total, The Karamazovs has eight nominations, Tobruk and A Country Teacher seven each. Filip Renc's Guard No. 47 [trailer] is nominated in five categories.
Nominees for Best Actor are Pavel Liska (A Country Teacher), Karel Roden (Guard No. 47) and Ivan Trojan (The Karamazovs). Contenders for Best Actress are Zuzana Bydzovska (A Country Teacher), Anna Friel (Bathory [trailer]) and Martha Issova (Night Owls).
The nominees for Best Documentary are Helena Trestikova's EFA Prix Arte winner René, Pavel Koutecky and Miroslav Janek's Citizen Havel [trailer] and Pavel Stingl's for A Ghetto Named Baluty.
Three films are nominated for Best Foreign Film: Joel and Ethan Coen's No Country for Old Men, Paul Thomas Anderson's There Will Be Blood and Andrzej Wajda's Katyn.
The winners of the Czech Lion Awards will be announced March 7 in Prague.
