London critics laud Slumdog

Another awards ceremony, another triumph for Slumdog Millionaire [+see also:

. In what has now become a familiar pattern for the 2009 awards season, Slumdog dominated the 29th annual London Film Critics’ Circle Awards.

The film added three more awards to its already groaning mantelpiece – Attenborough Film of the Year, British Director of the Year for Danny Boyle and Screenwriter of the Year for Simon Beaufoy.

Kate Winslet won Actress of the Year for her performances in The Reader [+see also:

Steve McQueen was chosen as the Breakthrough British Filmmaker and Ari Folman’s Waltz with Bashir [+see also:

was declared Foreign Language Film of the Year.

Dame Judi Dench was given the Dilys Powell Award for outstanding contribution to cinema. She said, “I feel terrific to have won. I really know nothing about film, as you go along you pick it up from other actors, you watch them. It’s a constant learning process. I hope it’s not a kind of ‘Thank you very much and that's it’ – I don't want to move on.”

Awards chairman Jason Solomons said, “I’m thrilled that we can add our chorus of approval to those receiving rightful acclaim elsewhere.”
