New wave for the Cinéfondation Residency

by

Six young international filmmakers have been selected by Gilles Jacob and his jury for the 18th session of the Cannes Festival Cinéfondation Residency.

They include Poland’s Rafael Kapelinski, Slovenia’s Martin Turk and Germany’s Andreas Bolm, as well as Guatemala’s Julio Hernández Cordón, Israel’s Yula Gidron and Chile’s Esteban Larrain.

The winners will stay in Paris from March 1-July 15, 2009, where they will work on writing their debut features and prepare their films in the best possible conditions.

Kapelinski’s project Up on the Roof traces three days in the life of a Pole exiled in Dublin, where he lives as he sees fit and goes to various lengths to prove to his wife (who turns up unexpectedly) that he has an apartment, an employer, an office and a secretary.

Turk’s Feed Me with Your Words is made up of three accounts that tell the story of a family affected by mental illness. Meanwhile, Bolm’s The Revenant looks at how a young man – who has just suddenly left his girlfriend and their baby – lets himself be mistaken for a couple’s son, who disappeared without a trace a long time ago.

The Cinéfondation Residency produces positive results: 65% of the projects it has supported since its creation in 2000 have been filmed. This percentage reaches 89% if we take into account the 22 films in pre-production.
