González Sinde named new Culture Minister

by Sergio Ríos Pérez

08/04/2009 - Director-screenwriter Ángeles González Sinde, until yesterday president of the Spanish Film Academy, has been appointed the new Minister of Culture, replacing César Antonio Molina. One of her responsibilities will be to head the ICAA.

González Sinde (44) – who won a Goya in 1997 and wrote the screenplay for this season’s surprise Spanish hit, Sex, Party and Lies [trailer] (see news) – is the first film professional to hold the position.

Her appointment will undoubtedly help calm tensions between the government and the film industry, which has enthusiastically welcomed the news. It will also have repercussions for the fight against piracy, which is one of the minister’s greatest concerns.

The Academy of Film Arts and Sciences, which presents the annual Goya Awards, has congratulated its former president on her new post and announced that a replacement will shortly be named.
