Two major new Danish TV series – Liberty (to be aired by pubcaster DR) and Warrior (commercial broadcaster TV2), which have both started principal photography – will receive production funding from the Nordisk Film & TV Fond, the Oslo-based promotional and top-financing fund for film and TV productions from the five Nordic countries of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden.

While Liberty is an in-house production (see the news), the 6x48min Warrior will be produced by Miso Film’s Peter Bose and Jonas Allen, from an original script by the series’ directors, Christoffer Boe and Simon Pasternak, who also collaborated on the 2013 feature Sex, Drugs & Taxation [+lire aussi :

“Our ambition is to make a sharp, modern and potent mini-series that does not look back, but takes us out of conversation kitchens and daily weltschmerz and into the periphery of society, where men and women live and die for defending their ideals,” Boe told the Danish Film Institute, which has also contributed to the budget.

Starring Dar Salim and Danica Curcic, with Lars Ranthe, Nicolas Bro, Søren Malling, Natalie Madueño, Jacob Oftebro and Andrea Vagn Jensen, Warrior follows a Danish soldier, CC, who returns to Denmark after military service in various war zones. During his last mission, his best friend Peter was killed. At home, CC is wracked with guilt and finds it difficult to be satisfied with the conditions in a society that wants to forget about war. To assuage his feelings, he helps Louise, Peter’s widow, who is a police investigator focusing on gang crime and, in particular, Tom, the King of the Rockers. The series is programmed for the autumn of 2018.

The Nordisk Film & TV Fond’s €1 million package will also benefit Swedish directors Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein’s €4.5 million Swoon [+lire aussi :

fiche film], a modern Romeo & Juliet, based on the history of Stockholm’s Gröna Lund amusement park, and being produced by Kristina Åberg for Sweden’s Atmo Rights. Scripted by Mårlind, it follows John and Ninni, heirs to different amusement parks, who fall in love amidst the whirling world they both inhabit. Apparently, “a forbidden love and a war between two families put their love and loyalty to the test.”

Finally, Icelandic director Hrafnhildur Gunnarsdottir’s documentary The Vasulka Effect will also be subsidised; it portrays video-art pioneers Steina and Woody Vasulka, the “grandparents” of the YouTube generation, struggling in their retirement years – before they are rediscovered by the art world. The Margret Jonasdóttir production for Iceland’s Sagafilm will include Vasulka footage featuring Andy Warhol, Jackie Curtis, Philip Glass, Laurie Anderson, Jimi Hendrix and David Byrne, among others.
