VC Filmes to shoot Amália

A biopic on legendary fado singer Amália Rodrigues is currently being prepared by Lisbon-based company VC Filmes. Principal photography of Amália is set to start on June 9 in Portugal, before its cast and crew continue the shoot in Paris, New York and Rio de Janeiro.

Sandra Barata Belo will play the charismatic singer while behind the camera will be Carlos Coelho da Silva, known above all for having directed Portugal’s biggest box office hit ever, O Crime do Padre Amaro [+see also:

, along with several television projects.

The idea to make a film on Rodrigues came to producer Manuel S. Fonseca after seeing the success of Olivier Dahan’s La Vie en Rose [+see also:

]
.

VC Filmes - a multimedia company that manages, among others, the singer’s entire repertoire of songs - will invest €3m in the project. The film will be backed by public broadcaster RTP, which will also air a two-episode television version.

Domestic distribution is set for 2009, on the 10th anniversary of Rodrigues’ death.
