Sint-Lukas Brussels University College of Art and Design was founded in 1880.
Sint-Lukas Brussels is an independent institution, which is chosen for contemporary innovative art and design practices and for high quality academic and professional education. It offers four Bachelor’s and two Master’s degree programmes. It also organises a Teacher training course and the Advanced Master’s programme Transmedia. Sint-Lukas Brussels is a diverse and creative community of 850 students and 150 faculty members.
Sint-Lukas’s philosophy is based on the development of a student’s ideas and beliefs. During the course students are given every opportunity to shape their ideas. Self-will takes precedence over conventionality, innovation over cliché. At the centre is the individual learning and working process of art education. Students are encouraged to question each other’s work as well as their own continuously. This critical attitude moulds the student as a human being and as an artist and enables him to elaborate and refine his own work. Critical (self-) evaluation is an essential part of the course. What originates in the privacy of the artist’s studio in the confrontation with teachers and fellow students eventually culminates in a Master’s project that is presented to an external jury as well as to the public.

Programme objective and content:

• Bachelor’s degree

  The curriculum is a mix of practical as well as analytical and critical considerations. It is practice-oriented because it focuses on designing audiovisual works and producing films. But it is also academic to the extent that it elucidates the way in which films and audiovisual works are made, and explores the decision-making processes that lead to concrete productions.

  The studio or practical training constitutes the core of the curriculum. In the workshop, the curriculum focuses on the personal ambitions, interest and work of the student. The aim of the workshop is concurrently practical and theoretical. It provides both practical and technical knowledge as insight into the importance of skills and audiovisual techniques. The workshop moreover stimulates both the imagination, as well as a more conscious understanding of one’s work process and the relative position thereof in respect to the work of other audiovisual artists and filmmakers. Through individual advice and supervision and group discussions during the workshop, the student acquires insight into the complexity of work in the audiovisual arts as well as into his or her own creative possibilities. In addition to artistic and professional / technical skills, the student develops communication and analytical skills.

  In the theoretical and critical courses (in the form of formal lectures, colloquia, seminars, exhibitions or own data gathering and processing), the student acquires knowledge and insight into the way in which the audiovisual arts are considered, analysed and evaluated from the historical, philosophical and aesthetic perspective. By studying the historical developments of the great diversity of audiovisual artists and filmmakers, the student is exposed to the premises, ideas, values and concepts that audiovisual artists and filmmakers develop and promote, and in the way that the audiovisual world functions. The analytical and communication skills are developed in theoretical and critical courses, in group discussions, through writing papers, and through personal data collection and processing.

• Master’s degree

  Sint-Lukas Brussels University College of Art and Design offers two initial Master’s programmes:

  1. Master of Audio-Visual Arts, including specialisations in Film and Animation Film;
  2. Master of Visual Arts, with main subjects like Photography, Graphic Design, Advertising design, Comics and Fine Art.

  Both Master programmes are designed for talented and experienced students who want to deepen their knowledge of contemporary art practices and critical thinking and who want to specialise in one of the following fields: fine art, drawing, photography, graphic design or advertising, cartoons, media art, animation, documentary film, fiction film and scriptwriting.

  During the Master’s programmes, students devote most of their time to their individual practice leading up to their graduation project, called the “masterproof” Master’s thesis. This consists of a body of work supported by a written thesis. The thesis is meant to help them put their work into context and assist them in identifying their particular creative direction and cultural interests and in developing their research and analytical skills. At the end of the programme a formal review of their graduation project will be assessed by a jury of recognised artists and professionals and will lead to their Master’s degree.

One of the requirements that an International Student has to meet is the requirement of having the correct basic diploma. Admission is granted on the basis of a diploma.
