Cineuropa is an online information portal that promotes cinema and culture worldwide. The website is updated daily in four languages (English, French, Italian, and Spanish) and is designed for both industry professionals and wider audiences.
Cineuropa has implemented several collaborations with film festivals, cultural institutions, film funds, and training programmes. The website has also extended its range of coverage, producing several analyses on the state of culture in Europe and worldwide. Cineuropa collaborates regularly with Culture Action Europe and the Forum d’Avignon, two think tanks dedicated to cultural and creative industries and their dialogue with the economy.
Thanks to its recent focus on new technologies, Cineuropa has managed to drastically expand its audience in the last two years. About 600.000 people visit the website every month and the daily newsletter has 65.000 subscribers. Cineuropa has over 30.000 followers on Twitter, while its Facebook page reaches nearly 70.000 people.
Cineuropa offers a wide selection of content including special reports, country focuses, "making of" profiles, film and company databases, script analysis, and online training courses. Cineuropa’s main products are news articles and interviews. Thanks to an ample network of journalists based in all European countries, as well as an extensive group of non-European correspondents, Cineuropa is the leading source of information for European culture. A trusted source for breaking news, Cineuropa has managed to build a faithful and enthusiastic audience of cultural professionals, film professionals, and film enthusiasts based all over the world.
In recent years, Cineuropa has established numerous partnerships with organizations focusing both on European and non-European countries in order to widen its range of reporting and support industries that need European attention.
MANAGEMENT OF THE EUROMED AUDIOVISUAL PROGRAMME
From 2011 to 2014, Cineuropa co-managed the Regional Monitoring and Support Unit of the European Union’s Euromed Audiovisual programme, which is aimed at developing the film and audiovisual sector in the South Mediterranean region and promoting intercultural dialogue across Mediterranean countries. Cineuropa frequently publishes articles and interviews about film activities taking place in the following countries: Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Israel, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestine, Syria, and Tunisia.
ORGANISATION OF THE 2ND ALGIERS EUROPEAN FILM DAYS FESTIVAL
In 2014, Cineuropa organized the second edition of European Film Days in Algiers, proposing a list of 25 films. The festival’s selection included movies from 18 European countries as well as works from Algeria and the Southern Mediterranean region. Debates and master classes were also held during the festival.
Cineuropa is a key supporter of the Europe 2111 project, financed by the European Commission’s Lifelong Learning Program. The project brings together 9 European partners to develop audio-visual pedagogical material for 8-10 year old pupils.
Since 2010, Cineuropa has participated in a consortium that implements the Europe 2011 project, financed by the European Commission (DG EAC – Lifelong learning – Transversal sub programme Key Activity 3 – ICT). The goal of the programme is to develop a methodology of training based on the principle that the technology of information and communication (TIC) can play an important role in the acquisition of the seven key competences identified by the European Commission.
The objective of the project is to develop a training methodology for the acquisition of these key competences based on the use of audio-visual production, and more specifically the production of audio-visual documentaries, in a format that can be used in ITC channels. In creating this methodological base, the project transforms a technical process into a multimedia teaching tool.
FESPACO BUSINESS PLAN
The general objective of the study were to develop a 7-year development strategy accompanied by a 4-year action plan for the FESPACO (Panafrican Film and Television Festival of Ouagadougou), based on recent studies, conclusions reached by conferences held during the 2011 and 2013 editions of FESPACO, and an evaluation of the MICA (African Film and Television Market).
This strategic development plan for FESPACO served as a basis for reforms and advocacy on behalf of the State of Burkina Faso, inter-African and regional organizations, and other development partners. The document functions as a frame of reference for the organization of the biennale.
The first edition of the Panafrican Film and Television Festival of Ouagadougou (FESPACO) was held on 1st-15th February 1969. Since its institutionalization, successive editions of the festival have been held regularly, every two years. Thanks to the support of Burkinabe authorities, film professionals, the European Union, and other partners, today the FESPACO plays an important role in the cinematic and cultural landscape of the African continent.
EUROPEAN CINEMA SCHOOL NETWORK
Cineuropa has created an interactive space dedicated to European film schools.
This online platform showcases the most prestigious film schools and universities in Europe. The interactive tool allows users to exchange information, follow film news, view students’ work, and familiarize themselves with the curricula proposed by these various programs.
The creation of this portal was led by La Fémis in partnership with the London Film School and VSMU Bratislava. These institutions also spearheaded the annual ‘’European Film School Network’’ conference. This event brings professionals together to develop a common way of thinking on teaching, allowing the different schools to become more familiar with one another, as well as organizing dialogues between students and professors.
LUX FILM PRIZE PROJECT
The professional jury of the prize pre-selects 10 films, and awards 3 films among them. The members of the European Parliament vote among the three selected films the winner. The selected movies provide unique viewpoints on the social and political questions that are integral to European identity.
Cineuropa serves as a partner for the Lux Film Prize. In support of the initiative, Cineuropa organized the 27 Times Cinema event at the Venice Film Festival to showcase films shortlisted for the LUX Prize. In addition, Cineuropa is responsible for the publicity of the prize, ensuring the programme’s public visibility.
In partnership with the Albanian National Film Center, Cineuropa has created ALBAScript, a script development training programme for Albanian professionals. The program is open to Albanian writers/producers who are working on a short or feature length film project that has already received development funding from the Albanian government. The participants were coached in how to best structure their scripts and instil a regional perspective in their projects.
‘’WRITE FOR THE WEB’’
Cineuropa created a training course for journalists called ‘’Write for the Web.’’ The program is held during the Brussels Film Festival and equips participants with the techniques needed to write for a website, including how to conduct interviews and integrate social media into reporting.
Cineuropa offers online courses in screenwriting, feature film writing/development, and the international film industry.
Evaluation of projects submitted as part of the ‘’ACP Cultures+’’ call for proposals
The ACP Cultures and ACP Films programmes were integrated into a single programme: The ACP-EU Support Programme for the ACP cultural sector. The objective of this programme is to promote a favourable environment for the development of the cultural sector and creative industries in ACP countries. Specifically, the programme seeks to support the creation and distribution of cultural goods, promote cultural diversity, and generate jobs in ACP countries.
The Programme has launched two calls for proposals. A pool of experts from Cineuropa was selected to evaluate the concept notes and proposals of potential beneficiaries.
The call for proposals comprised two components:
1st Component: Cinema/audio-visual (Funds available: 10 million euros)
2nd Component: Other cultural and creative industries (Funds available: 10 million euros)
Cineuropa assisted the ACP Secretariat in an analysis of the best proposals and made a selection based on quality, completeness, and coherency.
