MOOLAADÈ

by Ousmane Sembene

synopsis

Seven years ago, Collé Ardo, who has undergone female circumcision, saved her daughter from Purification (circumcision). A new seven-year reign has been inaugurated. Four girls get wind of Collé's act of rebellion and take refuge at her home, asking her for the right of asylum, the Moolaadé. The village is seething with unrest. Two social values clash: the Salinde (the ancient tradition of female circumcision) and the Moolaadè.
