synopsis

In 1943, policeman Umberto is sent to escort the flamboyant con man Raoul Nuvolini from Terni to Venice, followed by Umberto's fiancée Luisa. When their train breaks down, they have to find a way to carry on towards Venice. While slowly travelling through Italy, the new Italian government signs an armistice with the Allies: everything will change, both for Italy and the three travellers.
