"The film got underway, like "The Other Side of the Tracks", by accident. I happened to visit some people lacking residents' papers who were staging a hunger strike against the punishment decked out to them," says director Bertrand Tavernier. "I was shocked by what the men told me. An agreement was reached, and they stopped the hunger strike a few days later, but I was mad at myself for not having reacted sooner. A second hunger strike took place three months later. I immediately left for Lyon with my son and co-director Nils. We met some extraordinary people when we were there. What they'd been through cast a spotlight on this unjust system..."
