SPLITTING THE SOP

by Diarmuid Galvin

synopsis

Historian Séamus Ó Tuama tells the story of the sport and its place in local folklore. We learn of the legendary Mick Barry and notables such as Liam O’Keeffe from Waterfall, his sister May who represented Ireland and Kieran Gould, from Fairhill, three-time King of the Roads champion. John O’Driscoll and his cousin Jim O’Driscoll are two of the many prominent bowlers from the Traveller community who’s success shows that community’s considerable presence in the sport.
