PRINCES AND VAGABONDS

by Fabienne Le Houérou

synopsis

Fabienne Houérou, Head of Research at the CNRS (French National Center for Scientific Research), follows the musical evolution of three musicians in the Thar desert. It takes us into their mystic, musical world. Their music is an identity and a geography. The melodies allow geolocation. They belong to the lower castes of Rajasthan: they are called Manganiar, which means "beggar" in Hindi. By statute, they are beggars in Rajasthan society, but veritable sultans in music. A sublime paradox that will be explored by our recordings justifying this work's title: Princes and Vagabonds.
