ROMANCE OF ASTREA AND CELADON

by Eric Rohmer

synopsis

The amorous adventures of the shepherd Céladon and the beautiful Astrée. Fooled by a suitor and convinced that Céladon has been unfaithful, Astrée dismisses the young man, who attempts to drown himself. She thinks he is dead, but he has been secretly rescued by nymphs. Faithful to the promise he made to Astrée to never appear before her again, Céladon does all in his power to make himself known to her without breaking his oath, going as far as disguising himself as a woman to be near the one he so dearly loves, fighting against his rivals and resisting the attraction of nymphs.
