Hou Hsiao Hsien

Of the ten films directed by Hou Hsiao-Hsien from 1980 to 1989, seven received prestigious international awards such as best film and best director at festivals like Venice and Berlin. The San Sebastian Festival dedicated a retrospective to him in 1995. Outstanding titles on his long filmography are: A Time to Live, A Time to Die (1986), FIPRESCI Prize at the Berlinale, A City of Sadness (1989), Golden Lion at Venice, and The Puppetmaster (1993), Jury Prize at Cannes. His most recent award is Best Director at the last Cannes Festival for The Assassin.
