Marko Mandi č • Actor

Shooting Star 2007 – Slovenia

by

Cineuropa met up with Marko Mandič at the Berlinale, where he is representing Slovenia in the Shooting Stars initiative. He was selected as a result of his performance in Teah (see Making Of), a youth-oriented story that revolves around a magic forest and strange characters, exactly the type that Mandič is fond of.

Cineuropa: What are you currently working on?
Marko Mandič: A crime drama called Landscape Number 2. The director is Vinko Möderndorfer and I play an art thief, a rather complex character with a dual personality who cannot tell the truth and lies to his wife. I have been very lucky in the past couple of years – few features are made in Slovenia but I managed to take part in almost all them. It’s impossible to survive only working in the cinema in Slovenia, all actors work in the theatre as well.

What kind of roles would you like to play in the future?
I like complex roles, problematic characters struggling with heavy contradictions. I am very fond of strange and surrealistic stories. I would like to play a mentally handicapped person to understand how they actually behave. Being an actor helps me understand others and, indirectly, understand myself as well, my own fears and oddities.

Who are the filmmakers you would like to work with?
I love Hanneke, Kusturica, Ozon, Chereau and Almodóvar.

What could the MEDIA Programme do to promote filmmaking in small countries?
I think MEDIA plays a key role in the promotion of films, but it is essential that the very first type of promotion comes from the original country. We need to maximize our promotional platforms at the local level. It takes passion to sell a film and only those who produced it or directed it are actually able to defend it enthusiastically.

What does it mean for you to be a Shooting Star?
It is an opportunity to meet with directors and casting agents and to create a network of international contacts.
