L'adversaire versus Hollywood
- A set-back for French films but Paris intends fighting back and puts Nicole Garcia in the front line
According to a report published by the CNC that covers the first seven months of 2002, French films now occupy 38.8% of the national market, a 7.5% drop on last year's figure of 46.3%.
In 2001, French films managed to beat Hollywood productions into second place with a 43.2% quota of the French market. The reasons for this are threefold: Men in Black 2, Scooby-Doo and SpiderMan.
French cinema will not go down without a fight and initiated a recovery when Bac Films released Nicole Garcia’s L’adversaire onto 300 screens last Wednesday. Based on a real-life event and Emmanuel Carrère’s novel, L’adversaire is a psychological thriller starring Daniel Auteuil as a man who murders his family after they discover that he has lived a lie for 18 years. This is Garcia’s fourth feature as a director, her earlier successes being Place Vendôme and Le fils préféré, and her cast includes Géraldine Pailhas, François Cluzet and Emmanuelle Devos.
