- Working Title's new comedy is number 1 with a bullet and knocks the formidable Men in Black 2 off their perch. Pedro Almodovar's Speak to Her in Top 20 too
During its first weekend on general release onto 368 UK screens, The Guru, co-produced by Working Title and UIP, shot to the top of the British box office earning a reported Euros2.2million, and pushing Men in Black 2 into second position and effectively ending its three week reign. Directed by Daisy von Scherler Mayer, the comedy of errors stars Jim Mistry as The Guru, an Indian dance teacher who goes looking for work in America, meets a porn star played by Heather Graham and ends up being mistaken for an expert in matters sexual by New York socialites. The film also stars Marisa Tomei.
Another of this weekend’s four new entries, Rob Bowman's Reign of Fire starring British actor, Christian Bale, was released onto 365 screens and came third with a reported three-day box office total of Euros1.4million, while new-entry Speak to Her by Pedro Almodovar came in at eleven, taking Euros 265,588 on just 57 screens.
