Edel and Eichinger join forces on hip-hop film

– nominated for the 2009 Best Foreign Language Film Oscar and four Lola German Film Awards (to be presented next week) – director Uli Edel and producer-screenwriter Bernd Eichinger have joined forces again for a title that looks at another underground scene, through the life of hip-hop star Bushido.

The friendship between Edel (who has also worked a great deal for television, particularly in the US) and Eichinger dates back to their film studies in Munich. From the start of their collaboration, together they have explored society’s dark recesses, notably in the hit films Zoo (1981) and Last Exit to Brooklyn (1989).

Born in 1978 under the name of Anis Mohamed Ferchichi, Bushido is Germany’s best-known hip-hop star. With eight gold and two platinum-selling records, he has sold over 1.5m albums.

The film tracing Bushido’s life story will start shooting this summer and is expected to be released in 2010 by Constantin Film. The latter company is also producing, in co-production with Rat Pack Filmproduktion (Hui Buh: The Goofy Ghost [+see also:

Bushido said that he couldn’t "wish for anything better than to make a film with Bernd and Uli. When they suggested the project to me, it was as if Eminem had called (...). If there is anyone who knows how to make films in Germany, it’s surely those two".
