Denstad Langlo among top prize-winners at Tribeca

Norway’s Rune Denstad Langlo has snagged the second top prize, Best New Narrative Filmmaker (and $25,000 in cash), at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival (April 22-May 2) for his directorial narrative debut North [+see also:

. According to the jury, the former documentary filmmaker “shows a mastery of comedic direction in North. His consummate vision, strong grasp of story and command of the language of cinema make him a standout amidst a strong pool of candidates.”

Top prize, the Founders Award for Best Narrative Feature, went to Iranian title About Elly, written and directed by Asghar Farhadi.

Europe was also represented in the Best Actor category, as Ciarán Hinds (Hallam Foe [+see also:

) beat out many strong contenders with his performance in the Irish paranormal thriller The Eclipse.

Not surprisingly, the US swept up the many other awards, including the Audience Award (to Raymond De Felitta’s City Island), Best Actress in a Narrative Feature (Zoe Kazan, The Exploding Girl) and Best Documentary Feature (Marshall Curry’s Racing Dreams). In the latter category, a Special Mention was given to the Danish/Austrian/US/Israeli co-production Defamation, directed by Yoav Shamir.

Serbian director Darko Lungulov won the Best New York Narrative prize for his internationally set film Here and There [+see also:

(Serbia/US/Germany) while Best Narrative Short went to Carlos Chahine’s The North Road (France).

With a programme pared down significantly from recent years, this year’s edition of the festival featured 85 features and 47 short films from 36 countries.
