UK film industry readies for busy fortnight

With four features and three shorts selected for official screenings and a further 190 films being sold in the market, in addition to a host of events, the UK film industry is all set for a busy festival.

The British nerve centre at Cannes will be the UK Film Council (UKFC) run UK Film Centre, open from Wednesday May 13 - Saturday May 23, which offers a cybercafé, free wi-fi access and a programme of events and activities for festival delegates and the media. The British Council is running the festival delegate information desk.

The Centre’s events programme includes: Stephen Frears in conversation with emerging filmmaker Paul King; Producer Jeremy Thomas (The Last Emperor) discusses his career with emerging producing team Al Clark and Rachel Robey (Unmade Beds [+see also:

); and UKFC Chairman Stewart Till speaks to Justin Marciano (Revolver Entertainment) about the future of distribution.

Other events at the Centre include: Meta Foldager (producer of Lars von Trier’s Antichrist [+see also:

, In Competition) on the new RED One camera technology with producer Stephen Follows (Moving Picture House) and Sean Wheelan (Filmgate); the chance to pitch your project with Paul Trijbits (Ruby Films), Peter Carlton (Film4), Jack Arbuthnott (BBC Films), Sally Caplan (UKFC’s Premiere Fund) and Emma Clarke (UKFC’s New Cinema Fund); and John Dick (MEDIA Programme) leads a group of UK aggregators working at the forefront of digital rights to talk about the “third way” between traditional and self distribution.

In addition, these will be advice on British film qualification from UKFC experts and one-on-one meetings with the UKFC US offering advice on shooting in the UK, production facilities and the tax credit.
