Frédéric Mitterrand appointed Culture Minister

After a year as head of the Villa Medici French Academy in Rome, Frédéric Mitterrand, nephew of France’s former president François Mitterrand, was yesterday appointed Minister of Culture and Communication, replacing Christine Albanel.

The TV presenter-author-screenwriter-producer has directed documentaries and features for the cinema (From Somalia With Love in 1981 and Madame Butterfly in 1995, which won the Cesar for Best Costume Design). The new minister also ran a network of movie theatres in Paris from 1971-86 and was president of the advances on receipts committee at the National Film Centre (CNC) from 2001-03.
