Millennium 2 and 3 get SEK12m from SFI

In its June round of production support, the Swedish Film Institute (SFI) gave out a total of SEK35 million to six films, including SEK12 million (nearly €1.1m) to The Girl Who Played with Fire [+see also:

and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest [+see also:

. SFI’s production support can be given out to a producer from pre-production until a film’s theatrical release.

The second and third films of the Millennium trilogy, directed by Daniel Alfredsson, were granted SEK6m each from two different SFI production schemes: the normal production support given out by SFI film consultants on a selective basis, and the more automatic market oriented scheme supporting mainstream films up till their Swedish premiere.

Hornet’s Nest and Fire, starring successful acting duo Michael Nyqvist and Lisbeth Salander, will be released in Sweden on September 18 and November 27 respectively.

The Swedish/Russian coproduction Newsmakers by Anders Banke was awarded SEK 500,000 (€45,000) in production support. Released in Russia on 450 prints in May, it’s a remake of Johnny To’s thriller Breaking News.

Three other Swedish films received support from the mainstream-oriented scheme. Popular filmmaker Colin Nutley got the biggest grant (SEK9m, or €821,000) for Änglagård – Tredje Gången Gilt, the third instalment of his 1992 hit House of Angels , set to go into production later in the year for Nutley’s company Sweetwater.

The comedy Bröderna Karlsson (“Brothers Karlsson”), directed by Kjell Sundvall for FilmLance International, will receive SEK 8million (€730,000). The project will begin production in 2010.

Lastly, Sommaren Med Göran (A Midsummer Night’s Party), the directorial debut of stand-up comedian Staffan Lindberg, was awarded SEK1.6million (€146,000). The romantic comedy will be released in Sweden in July 31.
