Unmade Beds opens Brussels Film Festival

The Brussels Film Festival, which renews the links with Cinematek's event Age d'Or and has partnered for the first time with the European Parliament's Prix Lux, officially opened last Saturday with the much applauded screening of Alexis Dos Santos' second feature, Unmade Beds [+see also:

After the incredible landscapes of Patagonia in Glue, the Argentina-born director here moved to an arty squat in London to tell the parallel stories of two teenagers. The Spanish Axl is looking for his long-lost father, while French girl Vera is recovering from heartbreak.

) and Déborah François, Unmade Beds is a lyrical journey of two lost souls, served by sparkling performances and remarkable work by DoP Jakob Ihre.

Santos' technique leaves a lot of room for improvisation, capturing our attention in a film full of awkward silences and hesitant dialogues. The actors were allowed to shoot scenes several times, using different dialogue each time as they saw fit, much of which came from their own feelings about the characters they were portraying.

Fully financed in the UK, Unmade Beds was produced by Soledad Gatti-Pascual for The Bureau and also received funding from Film 4, the UK Film Council's New Cinema Fund and EM Media. Part of the slate of UK sales company Protagonist Pictures, the film is being distributed in Belgium by Cinéart.
