, has again had a lucky draw at this year’s festival 44th edition, which ended Saturday.

Martin Pieter Zandvliet’s directorial debut Applause [+see also:

won the Europa Cinema Label and Paprika Steen the Best Actress Award.

One of the favourites at the festival, Applause received positive articles in the press, notably from trade magazine Variety, which praised Paprika Steen for her “fearless, tour de force performance”.

In this powerful drama inspired by John Cassavettes’ A Woman Under the Influence and Opening Night, and written for Steen, the talented Danish actress plays famed stage diva Thea, a former alcoholic struggling to regain a foothold in life as well as custody of her two sons from her ex-husband.

The low-budget film was a produced by Steen’s life partner Mikaels Rieks (Koncern Film) for the Danish Film Institute’s low budget innovative scheme New Danish Screen. The domestic release is scheduled for September 25 and world sales are handled by TrustNordisk.
