Summer is the season of sun, beaches and holidays. But not for everyone, for during these torrid months shooting will begin on several films that are sure to attract a lot of attention in early 2010.

One of the most highly anticipated titles is undoubtedly Eduardo Chapero-Jackson’s first feature foray, Verbo (“The Word”), produced by Apaches Entertainment and Telecinco. So far, little has been revealed about the film, described by Telecinco’s CEO Ghislain Barrois as “a very special, almost poetic film”.

Another director making the transition to features is Aragon-born Paula Ortiz with De Tu Ventana a La Mía (“From Your Window to Mine”), produced by Montxo Armendáriz’s company Oria Films and Amapola Films. The title will star actress Maribel Verdú, who recently won the National Cinema Award.

While shooting continues on Nacho G. Velilla’s new work Que Se Mueran Los Feos (“Let the Ugly Die”, see news), comedy will be well represented thanks to Roberto Santiago and Miguel Ángel Lamata.

Still savouring the success of Road To Santiago, Santiago will direct an adaptation of the stage play ¿Estás Ahí? (“Are You There?”) for Lazona and Arcadia.

Meanwhile, Lamata, a close collaborator of Santiago Segura, who will produce for Amiguetes Entertainment, is trying his hand at romantic comedy with Tensión Sexual No Resuelta (“Unresolved Sexual Tension”). The film stars Hugo Silva (Sex, Party and Lies [+see also:

film profile]), one of the most sought-after Spanish actors of the moment.

This summer’s cocktail of Spanish cinema would be incomplete without a touch of genre film, which comes in the form of Rodrigo Cortés’ second feature, Buried. This English-language film, featuring up-and-coming Hollywood star Ryan Reynolds, is co-produced by Spain’s Versus Entertainment and US outfits The Safran Company and Dark Trick Films.
