will represent Italy in the nominations race for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar.

The director, who won an Oscar in 1988 for Cinema Paradiso, says he is hopeful given the film’s public success at the Toronto Film Festival. "It was an absolute triumph that really surprised us. In a statement, Medusa Film said, "This is just the first step. The road to the Oscars is still long and we will work passionately and enthusiastically, as we have so far, to get to the top".

Tornatore can also be satisfied with his box office results. Baarìa ended its opening weekend with over €2m and a per-screen average of €4,244 from its 510 screens. This is a personal record for the Sicilian director: none of his previous films ever got off to such strong starts.
