Dinard crowns Murphy’s White Lightnin'

Unveiled at Sundance and lauded in the Berlinale Panorama 2009 (see review), this debut feature was produced by Film and Music Entertainment with backing from the UK Film Council. It traces the misfortunes of a "dancing outlaw" in the Appalachian Mountains in West Virginia.

The jury presided by Jean-Paul Rappeneau also awarded the film the White Hitchcock for Best Cinematography (DoP: Tim Maurice-Jones). White Lightnin' was released in the UK by Momentum Pictures on September 25.

Other Dinard prize-winners include Henrique Goldman’s Jean Charles (selected at Toronto - produced by Mango Films), which took Best Screenplay, while Jamie Jay Johnson’s documentary Sounds like Teen Spirit won the Silver Hitchcock Audience Award.

Out of competition, Duncan Z.H. JonesMoon [+see also:

won the Bronze Hitchcock, awarded by exhibitors in western France.

Finally, the Special 20th Anniversary Prize for Lifetime Achievement went to Charlotte Rampling.
