Peter Liechti wins Arte Award
On Monday, the European Film Academy announced that Swiss director Peter Liechti’s The Sound of Insects: Record of a Mummy had won the EFA - Arte Award for Best Documentary.
The jury, composed of Franco-Georgian director Nino Kirtadzé, Austrian producer Franz Grabner and Russian documentary-maker Viktor Kossakovsky, praised the film "for its subtle exploration and minimalist way of creating an extraordinary visual story between life and death".
The Sound of Insects: Record of a Mummy is adapted from a fictional text by Shimada Masahiko and uses off-screen commentary to recount the final weeks in the life of a man who chooses to let himself die of hunger in the forest.
The prestigious award will be presented to Liechti on December 12 in Bochum (Germany). Shown in world première at the Rotterdam Film Festival, the film is enjoying an impressive international career.
