Stellar cast for new Varg Veum film
by Annika Pham
The Writing on the Wall (Skriften på veggen), the first feature film in the new Varg Veum series, will start filming next week with a stellar Danish/Norwegian cast that includes Nikolaj Lie Kaas (Angels and Demons), Lene Nystrøm (Deliver Us from Evil [+see also:
film profile]) and once again Trond Espen Seim in the central role of the private eye investigator from Bergen Varg Veum.
Stefan Faldbakken, whose feature debut Restless [+see also:
film profile] was selected in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard in 2006, will direct, as well as supervise the concept for the other five Varg Veum films of the series. “With The Writing on the Wall, we want to get deeper into the Veum character and show a side of him never seen before,” he said.
Other key cast members include Petronella Barker (Hawaii, Oslo [+see also:
film profile]), Eivind Sander (Restless) and Bjørn Floberg, who will return as Varg Veum’s partner in the police force.
The NOK21m (€2.5m) film – like the following five in the series – is produced by CineMiso (jointly owned by Norway’s Cinenord and Denmark’s Miso Film), with co-financing from SF Norway and TV2 Norge, and support from the Norwegian Film Institute and Nordisk Film & TV Fond.
The first Varm Veum series based on the private eye created by novelist Gunnar Staalesen was also made as a package of six films, two for theatrical and four for television. The two feature films, Bitter Flowers [+see also:
film profile] and Fallen Angels [+see also:
film profile]), enjoyed 230,000 admissions in Norway and the entire series sold over 600,000 copies on DVD.
SF International Sales is handling world sales.
