Seven of the 26 titles in official competition at the 60th Berlin Film Festival were announced yesterday, including three entirely European productions and two co-productions with third countries. As usual, the selection promises to be "a mix of styles and genres, by renowned directors and exciting newcomers", in the words of festival director Dieter Kosslick.

Among the selected titles is Roman Polanski’s latest, The Ghost Writer, a French/German/UK co-production starring Ewan McGregor and Pierce Brosnan.

, will present Austrian/German/Croatian/Bosnian feature On the Path, whose cast includes Shooting Star 2010 Zrinka Cvitesic.

Meanwhile, German director Benjamin Heisenberg (Sleeper) will vie for honours with Austrian/German film The Robber.

Omnipresent among the initial selections, Germany is also represented by Semih Kaplanoglu’s Turkish co-production Honey, and Rafi Pitts’ German/Iranian film The Hunter.

The other titles announced are non-European and promise to make a splash. They are Martin Scorsese’s latest film, US production Shutter Island, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Sir Ben Kingsley; and Karan Johar’s My Name Is Khan, the new title featuring Indian superstar Shah Rukh Khan. Both films will screen out of competition.

The rest of the selection will be unveiled in January.
