Wrona’s boxing saga My Flesh, My Blood hits screens

by

A blend of brutality and poetry is the best way to describe Marcin Wrona’s My Flesh, My Blood (Moja Krew), which is being launched in theatres today by Hagi Film and is considered one of the most eagerly-awaited debut features of recent times in Poland.

Indeed, the director garnered high acclaim in 2002 for his student film Magnet Man, which won numerous awards, including at Tribeca, Krakow, Munich and Pescara.

Co-written by Wrona, b>Marek Pruchniewski and Grażyna Trela, My Flesh, My Blood (whose screenplay won a prize in the Hartley-Merril competition) traces the experiences of a boxer (Eryk Lubos), who is forced to abandon his career after he suffers an accident during a fight.

He reacts terribly to this blow of fate, with no emotional distance. He tries to drown his despair by immersing himself in nightlife, clubbing and quick sex.

But he finds only emptiness and, in the end, decides to have a child. He thus goes in search of a potential mother and meets a Vietnamese woman (Luu De Ly). Seeming at first sight young and naive, this woman will nonetheless bring about a turning point in the former boxer’s life and change his perception of the world.

The cast also includes Wojciech Zieliński, Marek Piotrowski, Krzysztof Kolberger, Joanna Pokojska, Monika Obara and Roma Gąsiorowska. The film was lensed by DoP Paweł Flis.

My Flesh, My Blood was produced by Łukasz Dzięcioł and Piotr Dzięcioł for Opus Film. Its €1m budget (PLN. 3,853,097) included co-production support from TV networks TVP and Canal + Polska, and backing from the Polish Film Institute (PISF).
