- 8th Athens International Film Festival unrolls on September 12. No competition, but an Audience Award for best film

The 8th edition of International Film Festival of Athens will run from 12-19 September. The event is non-competitive and consists of the following section Panorama, a selection of recent films from all over the world; Special Screenings that highlights forthcoming releases, Diaspora Greeks, Documentaries, Short Films, and tributes to contemporary Mexican and independent America cinema, as well as the usual selection of major Hollywood productions. Although the festival is not competitive, there is an Audience Award of Euros6,000 for best film.
This year’s Special Screenings programme includes the controversial Irreversible, directed by the “enfant terrible” of French cinema, Gaspard Noé, and starring Monica Bellucci and Vincent Cassel, German director Tom Tykwer’s Heaven, a story of love and redemption based on an unfinished screenplay by the late Krysztof Kieslowski and his writing partner, Krzysztof Piesiewicz that was co-produced by Britain’s Anthony Minghella. The selection also includes Christopher Nolan’s Insomnia and Michael Winterbottom's 24-Hour Party People.
