Germany’s Oscar fever yet to break

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has chosen Michael Haneke’s The White Ribbon [+see also:

for the shortlist in the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar category (see news).

The film, produced by Germany’s Stefan Arndt of X Filme Creative Pool in co-production with Wega Film (Austria), Les Films du Losange (France) and Lucky Red (Italy), has already pulled in half a million admissions in German cinemas and has won numerous international awards. Moreover, DoP Christian Berger was nominated in the Best Cinematography category.

The two German co-productions Inglourious Basterds [+see also:

by Quentin Tarantino (German producer: Zehnte Babelsberg Film) and The Last Station [+see also:

by Michael Hoffman (German producer: Egoli Tossell Film) also received several nominations.

Inglourious Basterds was nominated for Best Picture, Directing, Original Screenplay and Supporting Actor (Christoph Waltz). The Last Station was honoured with two acting nods: Helen Mirren for Best Actress and Christopher Plummer for Best Supporting Actor.

The Polish/German co-production Rabbit à la Berlin by Bartek Konopka and Piotr Rosolowski (German producer: ma.ja.de Filmproduktion) was nominated in the Best Documentary Short category.

The 82nd Academy Awards ceremony will take place on March 7 at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles.
