A Contracorriente Films, new ally for European cinema

by

The complicated Spanish independent distribution scene acquired a new member last week, A Contracorriente Films, whose specialist area, according to its founder and managing director Adolfo Blanco, will be quality European independent films.

The Barcelona-based company plans to distribute between six and eight films per year with the number of prints varying between 60 and 80. The first titles set for release give a good cross-section of the company’s line-up.

The first to be launched, in April, will be Baltasar Kormákur’s Icelandic film Reykjavik-Rotterdam [+see also:

. Next in line will be Louis Psihoyos’ US documentary The Cove; and three French romantic comedies: Denys Granier-Deferre’s Wedding Cake [+see also:

, the posthumous work by Claude Berri (see news); and Pascal Chaumeil’s Heartbreaker, starring Vanessa Paradis and Romain Duris (see news).

A Contracorriente will also have production and international sales arms, to be launched at a later date, but for the time being it will focus on distribution. Ready for video distribution, it has the Millennium Generation collection, which brings together film adaptations of works by the most outstanding exponents of recent Nordic thriller literature, including Asa Larsson (Sun Storm), Arnaldur Indridason (Jar City) and Henning Mankell (The White Lioness).

Moreover, as its creators have admitted, A Contracorriente aims to recover the original ethos of Notro Films, a distribution company founded by them several years ago. Last November, it merged with another company in the Vértice 360 group, Manga Films, to create Vértice Cine (see news). The media speculated that, more than a merger, this was an absorption of auteur-focused Notro by the more commercial Manga Films.
