CANNES 2010 Un Certain Regard

Eight European directors in line-up headed by Godard

by

With films from Romania, France, Germany, Portugal, Switzerland, Hungary and the Netherlands, European production takes pride of place among the 18 features in the Un Certain Regard section, which is part of the official selection for the 63rd Cannes Film Festival (May 12 -23), unveiled today in Paris.

Among the selected titles are two films by undisputed masters in the history of cinema: Film Socialism by Switzerland’s Jean-Luc Godard and Angelica by Portugal’s Manoel De Oliveira.

Romania confirms its dynamism with two selected films: Cristi Puiu’s Aurora and Radu Muntean’s Tuesday, After Christmas. They are joined by Hungarian director Agnes Kocsis’s Pal Adrienn, The City Below by Germany’s Christoph Hochhäusler, R U There by Holland’s David Verbeek and Qu’est-il Arrivé à Simon Werner (“What Happened to Simon Werner?”) by France’s Fabrice Gobert.

It should be noted that this year’s official selection includes no Spanish or Scandinavian films whatsoever, while the Un Certain Regard section (to be completed later by one or two titles) promises to be fascinating, with further films by US director Lodge Kerrigan, Korea’s Hong Sangsoo, Japan’s Hideo Nakata and Canada’s Xavier Dolan.
