in recent years, it would be hard to find a film that equals it in media impact, awards and above all popular and critical appeal. The major success of this Majorcan director (41), who began his film career as a critic, is founded on his boundless love of cinema.

His next outing is eagerly awaited by the industry and, as he confirmed to Cineuropa at the latest edition of Madrid de Cine – Spanish Film Screenings (see news), he is currently working on two projects, both as yet untitled.

The first, which looks set to be his next film, is in the screenwriting phase. Monzón is collaborating with Jorge Guerricaechevarría, with whom he co-wrote Cell 211.

The director has described the film as “a thrilling and disturbing black comedy set in England and starring English-speaking actors”. Monzón plans to complete the screenplay and only then start looking for a producer, so he can ensure that the film is made as he intended. The second project is a Spanish-language thriller with a road movie structure.

Monzón is aware of the expectation surrounding his forthcoming work, but he has decided “not to enter into that game, because it only leads you to think about what other people want you to make. And that leads you to failure. I want to let myself be guided by my personal taste and intuition and give my best”.
