(selected in the Directors’ Fortnight 2005), the director is embarking on an exploration of mourning, a drama starring Sandrine Kiberlain (who was nominated for the Best Actress Cesar 2010 for Mademoiselle Chambon [+see also:

and will be seen at the end of the year in Nicole Garcia’s A View of Love), Clément Sibony, Bruno Todeschini and Serge Riaboukine.

Scripted by the director, the film centres on Anne (Kiberlain) who has lost a child. With no friends and no love, her life seems to be over already. Nobody sees or notices her and she ensures it stays that way.

She effectively retires from life, in the middle of everyone. But one day, years later, a bird falls into the chimney shaft of her home and everything changes.

L’oiseau is produced by Bertrand Gore for Blue Monday Productions for around €2m. Its budget includes an advance on receipts from the National Film and Moving Image Centre (CNC), pre-acquisitions from Canal + and Ciné Cinéma, backing from Sofica Cinémage and support from the Aquitaine and Midi-Pyrénées regions.

Shooting is scheduled to last six weeks with lensing by DoP Céline Bozon. Les Films du Losange will handle French distribution and international sales.
